Sports

Sport is a vibrant and important part of life at West End School. Every student takes part in regular Physical Education (PE) classes, designed to develop fundamental movement skills, teamwork, and overall fitness.Swimming is also included in our curriculum during Terms 1 and 4, with all sessions led by accredited New Zealand swim coaches.Outside the classroom, we offer a wide range of team sports including Rippa Rugby, Basketball, Hockey, Netball, Tennis, and Football. Students have the opportunity to represent West End in various interschool competitions throughout the year.We are proud participants in the Ricoh Sports Tournament—a major Manawatū interschool event where over 400 students from across Palmerston North compete in a variety of sports. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our students to challenge themselves, grow their confidence, and show pride in their school.

At West End School, we are committed to teaching not only physical education but also fostering the holistic hauora (wellbeing) of every student. We achieve this by engaging with a range of external agencies such as the New Zealand Police, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, and digital safety organisations that support students in learning to stay safe online. Our programme emphasises the importance of overall wellbeing, including healthy eating, dental care, and developing positive relationships with peers. Every two years, we are delighted to welcome Harold and the Life Education team to our school, who play a valuable role in supporting and enriching our health curriculum.

Swimming

We are incredibly fortunate at West End School to have an indoor swimming pool right here on our grounds, which is a massive asset to our curriculum and an essential part of keeping our children safe. Swimming is a vital life skill for children in New Zealand, given the many fantastic opportunities we have to enjoy being in the water. To ensure every student develops confidence and competence, we provide free weekly swimming lessons in Term 1 and Term 4, delivered by the amazing professional team at Hilton Brown Swimming. This dedicated programme culminates in our exciting school swimming sports event held at the pool in Term 1, making swimming an integral and enjoyable part of every student's year.
